NSA Governing Board Dissolved With Immediate Effect Less Than Nine Months After Inauguration

Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) Governing Board has been dissolved with immediate effect, bringing the tenure of the 15-member body to an abrupt end less than nine months after its inauguration.

The dissolved board was chaired by Dr. Fred Awaah, with NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah serving as a member alongside representatives from several institutions within Ghana’s sports and public sectors.

NSA Included Among Nine Affected Institutions

The NSA was not the only institution affected by the directive. Governing boards of nine state institutions were dissolved, including the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, BOST, VALCO, Consolidated Bank Ghana, Ghana Post, TDC Ghana and others.

The announcement, issued on September 2, 2026, stated that the relevant sector authorities should take the necessary steps under their governing laws to formally implement the dissolution. No specific reason was provided publicly for dissolving the affected boards.

What Happens to the NSA Now?

The dissolution does not mean the National Sports Authority itself has been dissolved.

Management will continue handling the institution’s normal day-to-day operations while a new board is being constituted. However, major policy, financial or contractual decisions that ordinarily require board approval cannot be undertaken without authorization from the appropriate authority during the interim period.

The affected governing boards are expected to be reconstituted in due course, although no date has yet been announced for the appointment of their replacements.

Timing Raises Questions for Ghana Sports

The timing is particularly notable because Ghana’s sports administration continues to face important questions surrounding infrastructure and the maintenance of major national facilities.

Recent public discussion has focused particularly on facilities including the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium, increasing pressure for stronger maintenance and investment in sporting infrastructure.

The incoming NSA board will therefore inherit significant responsibilities involving sports development, infrastructure and the administration of facilities used by Ghana’s national teams and sporting federations.

What Comes Next?

Attention will now turn to the composition of the new NSA Governing Board and whether the restructuring will produce significant changes in how Ghana’s sports infrastructure and national sporting programmes are managed.

The immediate priority, however, will be ensuring continuity at the Authority while the government prepares to constitute a replacement governing board.
