Six Arrested After Deadly Violence Erupts in New Winneba

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six individuals following a violent confrontation linked to a longstanding land dispute in New Winneba in the Central Region.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, resulted in the deaths of three people and left several others injured, prompting a major security operation to restore calm in the area.

Authorities say the violence stemmed from an ongoing land dispute involving groups from neighboring Gomoa communities, including Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze.

Three Confirmed Dead

According to reports, the clashes quickly escalated into a deadly mob attack that plunged parts of the township into chaos.

Three individuals were confirmed dead, while between 15 and 19 people sustained injuries, including a police officer who was among security personnel responding to the disturbances.

• One locally manufactured single-barrel gun
• One empty AAA cartridge

The recovered items are expected to form part of the evidence in the case as investigations continue.

Massive Security Deployment

In response to the unrest, the Ghana Police Service launched a significant security operation involving personnel from:

• Winneba Division
• Agona Swedru Division
• Mankessim Division

Additional reinforcement teams and armored vehicles were deployed from the National Police Headquarters to support local officers and stabilize the situation.

To prevent further violence, police established six strategic snap-check points while increasing both day and night patrols throughout affected areas.
